5th International Conference of TUI Concludes in Dakar, Senegal
The 5th International Conference of Trade Union International (TUI) Agriculture, Food, Commerce and Allied Industries was organised in Dakar (Senegal) between April 9 and April 14, 2024. The Conference was attended by delegates from 141 agricultural, food, trade, rural and indigenous national trade unions from 86 countries, representing more than 100 million members. The TUI is the largest union of its kind.
General Secretary of TUI Julien Huck placed the Conference report. In the inaugural session of the Conference, Comrade Vijoo Krishnan, General Secretary of AIKS, delivered a lecture emphasising the need for international solidarity and class-based action against neoliberal capitalism and imperialist forces. He explained the experience of issue-based united struggles in India against corporate forces which was received enthusiastically by the delegates.
The Indian delegation comprised of Comrade Vijoo Krishnan, P Krishnaprasad (Finance Secretary AIKS), B Venkat (General Secretary, All India Agricultural Workers’ Union [AIAWU]), Vikram Singh (Joint Secretary, AIAWU), Ravula Venkaiah (President AIKS-Ajoy Bhawan), Gulzar Singh Goria (General Secretary, Bharatiya Khet Mazdoor Union [BKMU]) and Vijendra Singh Nirmal (President, BKMU).
Vijoo Krishnan was elected to the secretariat of TUI. A Vijayaraghavan, President of AIAWU, Gulzar Singh Goria and Ravula Venkaiah were elected to the executive committee of TUI.
The Conference gave calls for peace and disarmament worldwide, especially in context of Israel’s war on Gaza and Palestinian people, to build movements that secure food sovereignty and fight famine and malnutrition, and advance the class struggle by the strengthening of unions.
