Workers and Peasants Unite to Make Two-Day Strike a Historic Success

Coordinated Initiative of CTUs and SKM Gets Support From All Sections

 

All India Kisan Sabha congratulates the crores of workers, the peasants and poor who came out in overwhelming support of the two-day General Strike called by the Central Trade Unions as well as the Rural Strike or Grameen Bharat Bandh called by the Samyukt Kisan Morcha. Massive campaign was carried out in the run-up to the Strike by the Working class with solidarity by the peasants and agricultural workers. Rallies, torchlight processions, bike rallies, street plays, postering, wall-writing was done extensively. The States of Kerala, Tamilnadu, Puducherry, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Odisha, Assam, Jharkhand and Haryana came to a total standstill. West Bengal and Tripura witnessed near total Strike. National Highways were blocked throughout the country and Rail Roko was observed at many places.

 

In Kerala, different programmes were taken up to propagate the demands of the workers and peasants. At all Panchayats the peasants and agricultural workers joined protest programmes of the CTUs. West Bengal had almost a total Bandh with the peasants and rural poor having protest demonstrations in over 700 places, blocking roads and trains. Defying threats and intimidation as well as State repression Tripura saw a near-total Bandh, with the people coming out even against the mis-rule of the BJP Government in the States.

 

Across Tamilnadu in more than 500 spots protests were held with huge participation. More than 1.2 lakh people took part in picketing and bus services remained skeletal. In Maharashtra, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana massive joint protests were held. In Jharkhand the SKM constituents including the Jharkhand Kisan Sabha organised a 12 hour Road Roko/ Chakka Jam on 28th March and also on 29th March the vehicles were off the road. In Assam on both days the Strike received support in cities as well as villages. Many activists were arrested; over 1148 volunteers of trade unions and Kisan Sabha were arrested. Buses remained off the roads. In Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Chhattisgarh and Jammu & Kashmir also enthusiastic participation was witnessed in protests. Bihar also reported massive participation of the masses in the Strike action both in urban and rural centres.

 

AIKS calls upon all units to remain vigilant on increasing attacks by the BJP Government, strengthening unity with constituents of SKM and widening it as well as building strong unity with the working class. The massive participation in the two-day Strike is a clear message to the Narendra Modi led BJP Government that the workers, the peasants and masses of our country will resist policies promoting corporate loot and protect the interests of India.
