On 22 August 2022, P Sundarayya Memorial Trust with LeftWord Books organized a seminar on the ‘Future of the Farmers’ Movement in India’, along with a discussion on the book “When Farmers Stood Up” written by AIKS All India President Dr Ashok Dhawale. Hundreds of farmers from various states, members of democratic organizations and progressive individuals attended the programme at Gandhi Peace Foundation in New Delhi.

Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM) leaders Rakesh Tikait, Dr Darshan Pal, Yogendra Yadav, CITU General Secretary Tapan Sen, AIAWU General Secretary B Venkat addressed the function which was presided over by SKM leader and AIKS All India General Secretary Hannan Mollah.

The programme began with Jana Natya Manch’s cultural programme, followed by a welcome speech by Dr Vijoo Krishnan, AIKS All India Joint Secretary. The SKM leadership unanimously opined that as narrated in the book, while the battle against the draconian farm laws was won by the farmers, the war against the corporate-led loot of farmers nourished by the BJP regime should be ferociously fought in the coming days.

SKM leaders with one mind said farmers should further strengthen the war against the establishment to enact the MSP law at the earliest since the Modi regime failed to fulfil the promise of making a law for ensuring a remunerative Minimum Support Price (MSP).

After three decades of neo- liberal policies the Indian farmers are already in a huge debt and the production cost is drastically increasing. To make things worse, the Modi regime is pushing another anti-famer and anti-people Electricity Amendment Bill 2022. In the name of Amritkal after 75 years of independence the Modi Regime is trying to sell off India to the Adanis, Ambanis and other domestic and foreign corporates. The farmers along with workers, women, students and youth of this country, through unity and struggle, are certainly capable of changing these policies and this government.

Author of the Book “When Farmers Stood Up” and the President of AIKS Dr Ashok Dhawale said, “The establishment had played all dirty tricks to demoralize the protesting farmers and crush the movement, even going ahead with attacking those who extended support to the Kisan Movement. Battling the government, the Covid pandemic and extreme weather conditions, farmers stood firmly in the battlefield for over a year and won against the government of corporate communalism. The farmers and workers in the country will fight communalism and the disastrous socio-economic policies, and will defeat the Modi regime in 2024.”
