AIKS Press Note on Howarh Gang Rape

6th February, 2014

All India Kisan Sabha strongly condemns the barbaric attack and gang-rape of two women by 10 Trinamul Congress leaders and goons in Howrah on 4th February midnight. The incident took place in the village Muktir Chak under Amta Police Station in Howrah District. The victims were a woman aged 43 years and her daughter-in-law aged 23 years. They were gang-raped and brutalised using sharp weapons and both are in a serious condition in the Uluberia Sub-Divisional Hospital. Their family has for long been active members of the Paschim Banga Krishak Sabha. The assailants threatened the villagers to quit the Krishak Sabha and stop supporting the CPI (M) or face more serious consequences.

The Trinamul goons initially attacked the village on 17th December and in the wake of unprecedented physical assaults and threats many of the male members as well as local leaders of the Krishak Sabha were forced to take refuge in nearby villages. It was under such circumstances that this barbaric attack was perpetrated. This is yet another in a series of grave incidents of sexual assaults and violence against women that have been going on in West Bengal ever since the Mamata Banerji led TMC Government assumed power.

Krishak Sabha and Left Parties have called for a protest against Trinamul barbarism and the State Government’s patronage for rapists in Howrah tomorrow. AIKS demands that the rapists be arrested immediately and be given maximum punishment. We express solidarity with the victims and call upon all units to expose the character of the TMC and the Mamata Banerji regime.
