AIKS Dips Its Red Banner in Memory of Com. Sukomal Sen
The All India Kisan Sabha expresses grief at the passing away of Com.Sukomal Sen veteran Trade Union leader and leader of the Communist Movement. He passed away at the age of 83 after fighting illness for a long time. Even at his advanced age he engaged with his responsibilities and set an inspiring example to all. Com.Sukomal Sen played a significant role in building the movement of the State Government Employees. He made great effort for building the movement of Government employees across the country. He served as the General Secretary of the All India State Government Employees Federation from 1982 to 2008. He was Senior Vice Chairman of AISGEF till his demise. He also held important responsibilities in the CITU and also was formerly its Vice President. He played his role in building unity of the working class and different Trade Unions as well as emphasised the need for strengthening worker-peasant unity.
Com.Sukomal Sen joined the Communist movement and became a member of the Communist Party when he was only 18 years old in 1952. He held many responsibilities and was the Chairman of the Central Control Commission of the CPI(M) as well as an ex-officio member of its Central Committee. He had also served as a parliamentarian having been the voice of the toiling masses in the Rajya Sabha for two terms.
He was an educator par excellence with his insightful writings and lectures. His book Working Class of India: History of Emergence and Movement (1830-2000) is a reference for activists as well as researchers on the working class movement. Such an exhaustive study probably is the only one of its kind and has been translated to many languages. His role in the World Federation of Trade Unions and Trade Union International and wide experience was also reflected in a book he wrote International Working Class Movement-Dynamics of Class Struggle Vs Class Collaboration. Communist Manifesto and Theory of Revolution as a tribute on the 150th anniversary of the Communist Manifesto, May Day and Eight Hours Struggle in India and a host of writings on various political issues, culture, organisation, Marxism-Leninism and ideological issues shall guide generations to come.
AIKS pays homage to Com.Sukomal Sen and dips its red banner in his memory. We convey heartfelt condolences to his wife, sons and innumerable comrades who have been with him on the struggle front.
