More than 400,000 farmers to protest at Ramlila Maidan
Incessant rain may be a huge headache for some in the capital city but not for more than 4 lakh workers and farmers who are arriving in Delhi to protest on 5th September.
Farmers and trade union workers are reaching Delhi in droves to protest in front of the Parliament demanding an end to the agrarian crisis, better employment and an end to hunger.
The protestors are coming from across the country, including Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Bihar, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Haryana.
The Mazdoor Kisan Sangharsh Rally is organised to demand employment, remunerative prices for farmers produce, loan waiver for poor peasants and agriculture workers, checking forcible land acquisition, Universal Social Security, protection of labour law and agriculture workers and others.
An all–India farmers’ organisation, the All India Kisan Sabha (AIKS) claims that more than 4 lakh people will gather at Ramlila Maidan.
“On September 5, we will start a march towards parliament with a list of demands,” says Hannan Mollah, General Secretary of AIKS.
“There is a group of youth who has travelled over 2,500 km on their motorcycle from Palakkad district of Kerala,” says Vijoo Krishnan, a leader of AIKS.
S Thirunavukkarasu, the President of All India Agriculture Worker Union said more than 10,000 agriculture workers are joining from Tamil Nadu and Kerala. Some groups are even live streaming their march on social media.
Prabhat Pattnaik, a well-known economist, has chaired a reception committee to ensure arrangements for the protestors.
In August, AIKS had organised Jail Bharo movement in 400 districts in the wake and had received support from a Dalit organisation and ex-servicemen’s associations.
