Thane, Aug 9 (UNI) The ‘Jail Bharo’ agitation, called by the AIKS-CITU, on Thursday received a good response in over 25 districts of Maharashtra, with the AIAWU, AIDWA, DYFI and SFI activists participating in this stir.
Nearly 45,000 people courted arrest in the districts of Thane, Palghar, Nashik and Solapur alone, AIKS president Dr Ashok Dhawale told this correspondent.
Besides concentrating on the burning demands of farmers and workers,
the agitators called for the defeat of the anti-people, pro-corporate, communal and divisive BJP government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
In Thane-Palghar districts, braving heavy rains and setting aside their paddy cultivation, over 21,000 people blocked the roads and courted arrest in seven tehsils, viz Vikramgad (5500 protesters), Dahanu (3500), Wada (3000), Shahapur (3000), Talasari (2500), Jawhar (2500) and Palghar (1000).
Women also took part everywhere in large numbers.
